General Information
All ages and experience levels are welcome at our
dance. Dress is casual and comfortable -- there is no special
dress. Shoes should be comfortable, low-heeled and soft-soled.
To protect the dance floor do not wear street shoes or
high heels.
It is not necessary to attend with a partner. In
fact, it is customary to change partners after each dance and
is as common for women to ask men to dance as for men to ask women.
People of the same gender often dance together as well.
Contra and square dances are social dances and are
enjoyed by people of all ages and lifestyles. The dance steps
are easy, mostly involving a smooth walking step. Most people
learn the basics after one to three dances.
The regular Friday night dances include a beginners'
workshop at 7:30pm to give dancers a chance to try the moves at
a slow tempo before the dance begins at 8:00. If you are unfamiliar
with contra or square dancing, we recommend that you come early
to take advantage of the workshop and easier dances.
Less experienced dancers are also encouraged to
seek out more experienced dancers as partners. You will learn
faster, and it can be flattering for your partner to be identified
as someone you can learn from.
Regular dancers will often wear a name button or
tag to identify themselves. Feel free to seek them out for more
information!
